5 Things to Consider Before Remodeling Your Home

These home renovation tips will help you decide if you are ready to commit to remodeling your home and help you make the right decision.

How to know if remodeling is right for you?

Remodeling your home can be a challenging process. It often requires months of planning, revising and revisiting before the project even begins. Additionally, the process could take months and sometimes longer to complete. But, at Element Design + Build, we also believe that remodeling your home can also be very rewarding in the end.

We know renovating an existing home is not the right decision for everyone. So in this article, we are going to discuss 5 Things to Consider if you are thinking about remodeling your home.

Know Your Budget

Budget is oftentimes a challenge to consider and typically is the last thought in a homeowners mind. And we get it, it can be overwhelming and make you feel vulnerable. We recommend discussing numbers with other decision makers in the project, prior to discussing with your contractor. Get clear about what you have to spend, prioritize, and your design-build team will be here to support you. Products selections can often range so vastly. Knowing your end goal investment and aesthetic wise will help save time, money and frustrations. And you can feel confident and supported knowing that your Design-Build team will work to find solutions that meet your desired outcome.

Once you have determined a realistic budget, make a list of areas that are a top priority for you. You may need to narrow down your list by asking yourself what you really need versus what you simply want. Use these questions to help you develop your list of priorities:

  • What area of my home gives me the most grief? Maybe your kitchen does not have enough storage, or does not allow you to entertain friends and family. Maybe your master bath is not a comforting environment that allows you to relax and unwind after a long day. Think about the things in your home that do not functionally work or provide you with a good sense of well being.
  • What areas would enhance your quality of life? Maybe the key to loving your home isn’t what you think it is. I often like to challenge clients to think about what it is that they feel they are missing from their life right now. Maybe you spend most of your time indoors and you’re lacking vitamin D and access to nature. In this case, maybe the priority should be a beautiful backyard patio. Or maybe your shower contains mold and mildew from a concealed leak and it is impacting your health, in this case you might consider it a priority to renovate your bathroom to address these issues. Sometimes the priority is not simply aesthetic, this is where we challenge you to consider your mental, physical and emotional needs.

Know Who You Are Hiring

Make sure you are a good fit with who you are working with. Not every contractor will be the right one for your particular project. Ensure that your contractor has the proper licences, insurance and processes in place prior to hiring. Consider these questions when making your decision:

  • Do you like their communication style?
  • Do they take time to understand your needs and provide documentation for approval that shows they understand your needs?
  • Do you have confidence that they can execute your desired outcome?
  • Do they take time to get to know you and understand your needs?

Have Patience

Remodeling is a complicated process. I like to call it Murphy’s Law of Designing and Building. Understand that there will be issues, despite careful planning, unforeseen changes can come into the mix. There will be delays in schedule, you will at times need to make big decisions under pressure, and will have times of stress and frustration. Remodeling is an invasive process, this is where ensuring you have hired the right contractor is crucial. Will your design-build team go to all lengths to get the project back on track and be open and honest when things do go wrong?

Stay Positive, Enjoy the Process

At the end of the day, this is an exciting journey for you and your family. Enjoy and trust the process. When it is all said and done with you will soon have a beautiful space that you and your family get to enjoy for years and years to come!
